The Origional Equipment trunk latch handle on the K1200LT is known to be fragile.
Cast from a zinc alloy often called "pot metal", it lacks mechanical strength, often failing with normal use. For such a common failure to happen on a machine of such quality was not acceptable to us.
The Problem A weak casting leads to...
My handle broke! Many owners report their latch handle breaking under normal use. Knowing of this weakness, many have modified the latch hooks on their bikes in the hope of avoiding this failure. In spite of these efforts, an un-scientific and subjective 'straw poll' indicates a significant failure rate across model years, possibly as high as %70. The manufacturer's 'fix' is to replace the entire lower half of the tail trunk. You can not buy the OEM latch handle itself. Prices for this assembly have been reported to run from $600 to $800. Fortunately, many owners have been able to replace their broken latch handles by having their tail trunks replaced under warranty. Some have been replaced multiple times.
The Process We were not satisfied with the manufacturer's fix.
Design and build My latch handle broke the second day I had my bike. I bought it used, with no warranty. Rather than pay for parts I didn't need, I sent the broken bits and a salvaged tail trunk from a wrecked LT to Evan Guy Enterprises, Inc. in Texas. They build custom parts for NASA, DOD, specialty engines, and more. Expecting them to simply repair the broken latch handle, they instead engineered a complete replacement kit. More than just the latch handle, a repair system that allows anyone with basic tools to complete their own repair.
Not only was this a 'Better way', it's one we could share with the rest of the LT community!
The Fix A complete, end user installable replacement latch handle kit.
K1200LT Tail Trunk Latch Kit Each handle is manufactured from a solid billet of aircraft aluminum by the same CNC milling equipment and techniques used to manufacture precision components for aerospace, racing and other demanding applications. The included fasteners are made of high grade stainless steel for strength, apperances and long lasting durability. This handle is what we expected, more than just an easy to install replacement, it's engineered to the exacting standards and manufactured to the high standards we expect of of our machines and ourselves. Finished with a durable, baked on powder coating, they appear to be OEM, but we know it's better.
All parts required for a succesful repair are included in each kit along with clear, illustrated instructions. Warranted for life against breakage - this replacement kit is the best solution we know of for a broken K1200LT latch handle.
Installation Installation requires complete removal the entire latch assembly.
Instructions and Help Included with each kit is a printed copy of our illustrated installation instructions.
The instructions are also available here on this site in the Resources Section. They'll guide you step by step and in detail in removing the broken latch handle, the latch bar and the latch handle bracket, assembling the new handle to the bracket and reinstalling it all to your bike. Provided in each kit are all hardware and fasteners required. All you'll need to provide is: thread locker, lubricant, a power drill or moto-tool, appropriately sized Allen wrenches and possibly other common hand tools. A complete repair should take about an hour, depending on skill level and experience.
